City Council Candidate - Sue Aguilar

Sioux Falls, SD - Political Candidate - Sue Aguilar For City CouncilSusan K. Aguilar was born and raised in the Whittier Neighborhood of Sioux Falls.  She attended Franklin Elementary, Whittier Junior High, and graduated from Washington High School.  Sue then went on to get her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of South Dakota in 1975. Later that year, she married her husband Rich, and they have two daughters - Jessica and Meghan.   

Sue began her professional career in New York, where she held positions as a Government Bond Trader, Human Resource Executive, and Social Services Administrator.  In 1983, Sue and her family returned to Sioux Falls.  In addition to her professional career, Sue has held leadership positions with many community organizations ranging from the United Way to serving as President of her Church.

In 1997, Sue Chaired the citizen lead organization that passed the School District’s Capital Improvement Bond, resulting in the upgrade of the deteriorating elementary schools as well as improvements to every other school building in the district.  Our community’s children continue to benefit from those facility improvements today.  It was after this successful effort that people encouraged Sue to run for the School Board.  She did, and was elected to serve on the Board for three years.  Although her children are both adults now, Sue continues to help the children of the School District by volunteering in the School Mentor program.

Sue’s other community leadership roles have included serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the SD Symphony, Chair of the PTA at the Elementary, Junior High and High School levels.  She is a past President of the League of Women Voters of Sioux Falls and later the League of Women Voters of South Dakota, the Junior League of Sioux Falls, Chair of the Southeast Technical Housing Foundation and Community Impact Division Chair for the Sioux Empire United Way.  She is former President of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.

She has also chaired the Sioux Falls City PATH Committee, Orchestra League for the SD Symphony and has been an active member as well as serving in key leadership roles with the Girl Scouts, and was a School District liaison to the Sioux Empire Homeless Coalition.  When the Helpline Center needed someone to serve as its Executive Director, they turned to Sue for her leadership experience.  She was also called upon to serve as the Acting Executive Director for the Alzheimer’s Association until they found a replacement.

Sue is a Graduate of the Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Sioux Falls program, and has been a member of various ad hoc issue research groups for
the City of Sioux Falls.
